April 25, 2005 There was a peasant in our village. He was a strange man.... (Chinese tale)
There was a peasant in our village. He was a strange man. If you told him that the neighbor's house was burning, he answered, 'Where do I come in? None of my business!'
He was nicknamed 'None-of-My-Business.'
Once None-of-My-Business bought a sack of soybeans in the town. He swung the sack to his back and carried it home. He did not notice a hole in the sack. He was walking and the soybeans were spilling on the ground. Soon his neighbor, who was also coming back from the market, drew up with him. He looked at the soybeans spilling from the sack and asked None-of-My-Business,
'Suppose you know that another man is in trouble. Should you tell him about it or not?'
'One should know one's own business!' None-of-My-Business grumbled out an answer.
The neighbor fell silent.
Some time passed. The soybeans continued spilling through the hole and the sack became half empty. The neighbor asked again,
'But if you can help him? What then?'
'You shouldn't do anything! What is the good of it? Don't intermeddle into other people's business!'
They reached the village when None-of-My-Business noticed that almost all soybeans had spilled from the sack. He got angry.
'Why haven't you told me about the hole?'
The neighbor answered,
'But you yourself said that it was none of my business!'
